Top Mistakes to Avoid When Setting Up Your Home Theater Projector and Screen

A projector too close to the wall will look wrong no matter what you spent. These are the misses we keep seeing.

Wrong projector placement

Every model has a throw range. Measure it. A table mount that gets bumped will shift the image. Use a solid shelf or a ceiling mount.

Wrong screen size or material

A small screen in a large room feels like a TV on a stage. An oversized screen in a short room strains the eyes and shows every pixel. Matte white for dark rooms; grey when you have leftover light. Size the screen to seating distance, not to the empty wall.

No light control

A bright projector does not beat a sunlit window. Blackout and dimming are part of the install. Afternoon glare will wash a cricket match the same way it washes a film.

Sound treated as an extra

All speakers in the front is stereo with extra boxes. Place fronts, centre, and surrounds, then set the receiver for the room. Uneven audio distribution means one sofa hears the film and the other hears mush.

Height, angle, and cables

A screen that is too high is a neck problem on a long watch. Level it to the main seats. Loose cables get pulled, trip people, and drop signal. Plan routes, clip runs, hide what you can behind furniture or in-wall.

Plan the throw, the screen, the light, and the speakers as one layout. Then test a full film before you call it done.
