How to Set Up the Best Audio Distribution System for Your Home

Music in every room is a zoning problem first. Buy speakers after you know which rooms, and whether they share a source or need their own.

Plan the zones

List rooms and outdoor spots. Same playlist everywhere, or different audio per room? Large rooms need more output; small ones overload easily. Hard floors reflect; rugs tame that. Sketch dead corners now. If a future terrace is likely, leave cable or a wireless hop in the design.

The three pieces

• Multi-zone amplifiers: one chassis, many rooms
• Speakers: in-ceiling or in-wall for living spaces; free-standing where you want a music-first room
• Control: phone or keypad so one zone can be radio and another a playlist

A solid processor or receiver is a better first spend than decorative speakers you will replace.

Wired or wireless

Wired is the stable, cleaner-sounding path. Retrofit in an old house means chasing walls or careful concealment. Wireless is faster to add and depends on Wi-Fi. Many houses mix: cable in the main rooms, wireless on a porch.

Tune, then keep it

Play a vocal track you know in each room. Fix hot and quiet spots with level, not by dragging a speaker into a corner. Stereo pairs work as a triangle to the seat. Use EQ for the use of the room — more low end for films, less harsh top for talk.

Dust grilles. Walk every zone monthly. On wireless, watch the network. On wired, check terminations. Apply firmware when the vendor ships it.
