Are Two Speakers Better Than 4?

Two speakers can be enough. Four is not automatically better.
What the extra pair is for
Two speakers — or a 2.1 with a sub — cover music and TV in a small or medium room if they're placed well. Four speakers usually means fronts plus surrounds, or two stereo pairs in a larger space.
Surrounds help films and games. A second stereo pair with no plan just fights the first. Don't add speakers to fill empty corners.
Room and use
Small lounge, mostly music and news: a good 2.1. Movies and a wider seating row: 5.1 (five speakers plus a sub, not "four") is the usual step. The count follows the layout, not a rule that more boxes win.
Don't mix this up with ohms
2-ohm vs 4-ohm is impedance, not speaker count. The amp must be stable at the load you connect. That's a matching problem. It is not a "louder is better" spec, and it is not the same as 2-way vs 4-way drivers.
Placement and a matched amp beat buying more boxes. Cheap speakers installed correctly often beat expensive ones aimed at a wall.
